Human vocalized sound and sounds created by instruments have been used for healing the mind, body and spirit by indigenous and ancient people throughout the world. Today, hospitals, health clinics, nursing homes, health spas and therapy centers are re-discovering how sound can aid in the healing process. For example, ultrasound uses very high frequency sound vibrations that are inaudible to the human ear. It is used during pregnancy to detect abnormalities. It is also used to break up kidney stones, shrink tumors, and has been found to help heal broken bones. Therapists use music to calm anxiety for surgery patients, to slow down and equalize brain waves, heartbeat, pulse rate and blood pressure, and muscle tension, to regulate stress-related hormones, boost immune function, strengthen memory and learning, boost productivity, and to stimulate digestion.
