XBA headphones review: Sony's line is music to your ears
Balanced armature is the same tiny, almost invisible driver that powers an average hearing aid, making for a smaller, more understated line of headphones that aim to still deliver a rich, full sound.
Do they deliver? I spent extensive time with the line over the last few months, and it’s a mix of good and bad. At its finest, the XBA line is brilliant, producing full magical sound from a set of earphones that possess a quiet sense of style. But not every pair of XBAs is worthwhile. Here’s an overview:
XBA-4
The flagship headphones in the XBA line is among the best earbuds on the market, producing a solid, rich sound. The XBA-4s achieve this by using four balanced-armature drivers.
The drivers are hidden in an earpiece that’s slightly larger than an average earpiece, but for the most part, the XBA-4s still fit comfortably. Four pairs of silicon eartips and another three pairs of noise-isolating tips afford you plenty of options for a snug-but-not-too-snug fit in your ears. Don’t plan on going running in them, but don’t expect them to fall out regularly, either.
